In 1826, thirty log buildings [were] erected on flat land one mile up the Credit River (now the site of the Mississauga Golf and Country Club). Egerton Ryerson [was] appointed missionary to the Credit village. Ryerson would later become prominent as the founder of the Ontario public school system but in 1826 he helped clear land, build fences, plant 61 acres of wheat, oats, Indian corn, onions, beets, carrots and pumpkins in this new community of 47 families.
