Study Opportunity
'Good Grief: A Christian Journey of Hope' - a threshold approach to grief and loss, with Jesus as our companion and guide.
Whether grief and loss feel extra heavy in your life right now, or you have been doing this hard work of processing for an extended time, your presence and perspective are most welcome at a time of study and compassionate self-care, through this year's Season of Lent. Starting March 11, and continuing through to April 15, we will gather weekly in the Merigold Room for six Tuesdays, from 2-3:30pm, in a relaxed and intentional small group setting. Drawing on the wisdom of Scripture, with selected texts by noted authors such as Francis Weller, Alan D. Wolfelt, and Anne Lamott, we will come together to learn, reflect, pray, and grow in shared strength.
Light pre-reading will be invited each week, and yet there is neither homework nor any prescribed texts for participation. The most important piece is to bring your story and your openness to that of others. Remembering grief and loss touch us all for diverse reasons, and in diverse ways, we will explore grief and loss through the lens of Christian faith, knowing it as part of the human journey. We will follow Francis Weller's text 'The Wild Edge of Sorrow' (each participant will receive a copy in advance), where he describes different kinds of grief as gates or thresholds of passage. His wise, repeated invitation is for us to come to our grief with reverence, trusting God meets us in every aspect of its unfolding. Along the way, we can learn to make space for grief's complex reality, and for one another. As Weller notes, this is hard and necessary soul work, to "remember who we are, where we belong, and what is sacred." ('The Wild Edge of Sorrow', 2015).
